Iran: remorse

The Iranian rial Saturday reached a historical new low against the U.S. dollar.
The rial felt 5% and was trading for 28,400 per dollar, compared to 26,920 on Thursday and 26,400 on Wednesday. There was no clear reason.

Iranian/American computerprogrammer Saeed Malekpour who has been sentenced to death for espionage, has reportedly “expressed remorse and repented”, his lawyer can apply for clemency in his case.
Mehrnews agency reported that the lawyer confirmed that his client’s death sentence has been approved by the Supreme Court.

Wednesday were in Gheselhesarprison 8 men hanged.
Their names are: (Mehrdad Salimi, Hussin Moradi, Reza Ruzbahani, Jahanshad Geravand, Jafar Haghi, Ali hedayat, Manouchehr Zangane, Asghar Sarlak.Initially they were scheduled to be executed in Evin prison.
The next day, at least six prisoners with charge of drug trafficking were transferred from Ghezelhesar prison and were executed in Evin prison.

Human Rights Watch says that Iranian judiciary should move forward to prosecute former Tehran prosecutor Saeed Mortazavi, for the death of protestors after the elections of 2009.
Mortazavi, now head of Social Security Organization in Iran is accused of involvement in the deaths, torture, and arbitrary detention of dozens of protesters and other rights abuses perpetrated over more than 12 years.

The wife of civil activist and journalist Saeed Matinpour from province Azerbaijan, said in an interview with International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran that she had submitted her husband’s latest request for conditional release and furlough to the Tehran Prosecutor’s Office.
Matinpour was sentenced to 8 years in prison, and has served four years, therefore he can qualify for conditional release.

Imprisoned humanrightsactivist and lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh,is nominated this week for the European Union Sakharov Human Rights Prize.This news came just as she has been deprived of in-person visitation because she wrote her defense bill on a tissue paper.
She has been deprived of visiting with her two young children in person for three months now and has not been allowed to visit with her mother and brother for the past year.

An Iranian diplomat was in New York surrounded and threathened by angry protestors .
He was escorted by police to a safe place.
The incident happened after the speech held by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for the U.N. General Assembly. Hundreds of protestors raided in front of the building of the United Nations.

Iranian newspaper Shargh was banned on September 26 following publication of a cartoon entitled “The Blindfolded Men,”. The cartoonist Hadi Heydari is summoned to court and Mehdi Rahmanian, the manager of the newspaper has been brought to Evin Prison.
Those protesting the cartoon state that it is an insult on Iran-Iraq War veterans, but many believe this to be a mere excuse for banning the reformist newspaper.

Iranian media reported that on September 25 one man was hanged in the prison of the city of Semnan.
The man, "H. Ch." was convicted for keeping 3400g crack.

The revolutionary court in Sanandaj sentenced 4 Kurds to a total of 120 years prisonterm.
Chengiz Ghader Kheiri was sentenced to 40 years in exile, Fakhroldin Faraji, to 30 years, Mohammad-Hossein Rezaei, 30 years and Ayoub Asadi, to 20 years.

Coordinating Committee to Help Form Workers’ Organizations in Iran reported that Alireza Asgari has been released on September 19 by Appeals Court of the Karaj Revolutionary Court.His sentence was commuted to one year with flogging, delayed for three years.
The physical condition of Asgari is bad.
September 22 additional 10.000 signatures were presented to the Ministry of Welfare, Labor and Social Affairs. The signatures were on the petition originally signed by 10,000 workers protesting the high cost of living and inadequate minimum wages.

The arrest of a son and daughter of Rafsanjani is seen as the latest blow by hardliners to his position. He has been banned from leading Tehran’s Friday Prayers, lost his role as the head of the Assembly of Experts. He also had been openly attacked at public events.
Both arrests are an escalation at a moment he seems to regain his position.

Kermanshah Post reports that on September 15 Kermansheh Bus Workers went on strike leaving the passengers stranded.They striked for not receiving gas subsidies and the low fares.City officials mobilized taxis and vans in the city.
The secretary of the Labor House in Qazvin says that last month more then 300 workers from factories of autoparts are laid off.
The workers with year of service ranging from 10 to 18 years worked with Poly Otan, Iranian Sanden Industries, Edrish Khodro, Malik Sun, etc.

IRNA reported that in the prison of Doroud, Lorestan Province one man has been hanged.
The unnamed man was sentenced for keeping 9 kilos and 618 grams of heroin.
In the prison of Shahrud were "M.M.", "A. M." and "M. R." hanged.
They were convicted for keeping and trafficking great amounts of crack.
Kurdish site Kurdpa writes that in the prison of Urmia Hashem Jahangiri and Iraj Deylami were hanged on drugsrelated charges.
Unconfirmed reports say that another 4 men had been hanged.
