Iran: fishy


April 30 are 3 men hanged in Tehran to the crime "plotting to place bombs in Tehran".
The names and details of the three have not been revealed.
According to a source in the judiciary they confessed that they planned to place bombs in Milad Tower, Karaj Dam, and in a metro station.


The prospects for the Iranian shrimp trade seem not bright.
More than 976 tons of shrimp bound for foreign states were sent back in the year to March 2007,due to qualityproblems.
The head of State Veterinary Organization Mojtaba Norouzi warned that the country may be unable to export shrimp in the year to March 2009.
According to him the country cannot export the marine crustaceans in the next year. The government has to spend huge amount on protecting producers.
If this sum had earlier been spent on upgrading the quality of shrimp, they could now have reaped its benefits.



Iran has expelled tens of thousands of Afghan refugees within the space of a few days in a new drive.
Since April 21 more then 30000 people have been collected and the majority of them sent back to their country via the borders.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) says that 25,000 have been forced out.
Afghanistan has already publicly asked Iran not to expel the refugees, saying that its own capacity to house them is very limited.
Millions of Afghans had fled to Iran a.o. during Taliban Government.
Since the fall of the Taliban, Iran has been working with the UNHCR and the new Kabul authorities on a voluntary repatriation programme.
This was not proceeding.



Hundreds of people marched through Tehran today to mark Labour Day, accusing the government of inaction in improving their working conditions, ILNA reported.
They came from a stadium in central Tehran in the officially sanctioned demonstration to mark May Day.
The Deputy Interior Minister for Political and Security Affairs, Brig. Gen. Mohammad Baqer Zolqader warned workers, students, teachers, and youths against participating in May Day celebrations.
