Iran: prison

The website Jaras reported that Wednesday, 2 people are sentenced to death and nine others received prisonsentences for torturing three protesters to death last summer at the notorious Kahrizak detention center.
The names of the defendants were not given and the verdicts are not final.
33 other people are accused of attacking a student dormitory.

Amnesty International started an urgent action for studentsleader Majid Tavakoli, who was arrested on December 7th, 2009 and is sentenced to 8 ½years in jail.
In May he went on a dry hungerstrike to protest his isolation, which he ended after a week when he was transfered to a general ward.
June 22 he was transfered to ward 350, where conditions are harsh.
He suffers respiratoryproblems and his health is deteriorating.

Amnesty International asserts concern for the deathsentences against 2 women who are in fear of imminent execution.
Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani is sentenced to death by stoning, for adultery. The verdict is final and can be executed any moment.
Zeynab Jalalian is a ethnic Kurdish political prisoner who is sentenced to death for moharebe over ties with PJAK.

The conditions for political prisoners in ward 350 of Evinprison are still worsening .
One of the cells for political prisoners is used for regular criminals.
Consequently, there are now fewer cells for political prisoners.
Currently there are 30 till 36 political prisoners in each cell and one third of them have to sleep on the ground.
Since June 20 prisoners are not allowed to call their families and the only phone calls made now have to be for specific reasons and made only under strict guidelines and under the supervision of officials.
It is announced that 50 prisoners who were arrested June 12 and were detained in torture wards 209 and 240 will be transfered to ward 350.
There is no hot water and hygienical conditions are bad, the food is also from low quality so prisoners are forced to buy food in the prisonstore and try to cook it.
