New proof is found which links Iran to murderplots. Last year Azerbaijani authorities rounded up nearly two dozen people in waves of arrests till early this year. All these people could be linked to Iran. Precisely who ordered the hits, and why, was never conclusively determined.
Officials from U.S. and Middle Eastern now see the attempts as part of a broader campaign by Iran-linked operatives to kill foreign diplomats in at least seven countries, including two Saudis, half a dozen Israelis and several Americans.
