Human Rights Watch says that the rights in civil society in Iran have been worsened since the elections of 2009.
In a report HRW writes that dat 3½ years after the elections hundreds of activists have sought temporary refuge and an uncertain future in neighboring Turkey and Iraqi Kurdistan.
The 62-page report “Why they Left: Stories of Iranian Activists in Exile,” documents that dozens of rightsdefenders, journalists, bloggers, and lawyers were targeted by security and intelligence forces because they spoke out against the government.
Some of this people had never been politically active before.
