Iran: mine-field

Smuggled and imported cigarettes count for some 75 percent of the country’s annual demand at present.
Taha Taheri from Iran Tobacco Company, said according to IRNA that efforts are underway to reduce the figure to 25 percent in the next two years.
55 billion cigarettes are sold in Iran per annum, of which 12 billion cigarettes are supplied by domestic production, 12 billion more is produced in cooperation with foreign companies, 24 billion is being imported through legal channels and 10 billion is smuggled into the country.



Iranian Defense Minister Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar said 16,238 hectares of land in Khuzestan province will be cleared of mines by the end of the current Iranian year (March 20, 2007).
He also said that of the total of 4,200,000 hectares of land planted with mines during the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war, about 1,500,000 hectares are in Khuzestan province.
The Center for Minesweeping, affiliated to the Defense Ministry, has presented a five-year plan, based on which the province will be completely cleared of mines by mid-September 2010.



One of eight Iranian house church leaders, Behrouz Sadegh-Khandjani from Tehran, arrested last month for "evangelization and threatening security" remained detained Thursday, January 4, on new charges that he must pay "an outstanding debt."

The other arrested christians (from Tehran, Karaj , Rasht and Bandar-i Anzali) were released on bail up to $40,000.
