Press-tv writes that an Iranian Ministry of Commerce official told Fars News Agency on condition of anonymity, that rice imports from countries such as Pakistan and Thailand have increased to help reduce prices and stabilize the domestic market.
The price of US long-grain rice - the global benchmark - has risen by almost two-thirds since the start of this year. The price for the Thai variety of rice, a benchmark for Asia, is also going up by similar amounts.
The prices of wheat and other basic foodstuffs such as maize and soya have also risen sharply, as demand has been increasing by continuing population growth.
The cyclone in Myanmar, the world's sixth largest rice producer, will also led to a shortage of global supplies.
The Asian Development Bank has warned that rising food prices may plunge more than a billion people in Asia into extreme poverty.
