Iran: developments

Two weeks ago it was announced that Basij is merged in the groundforces of the
Islamic Passdaran Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) . October 11 this plan was confirmed by the Armed Forces Joint Chief of Staff and he announced the creation of the “IRGC Ground Resistance” force for the Basij to work in society, and to delegate the tasks, duties and mobilization of Basij units in order to increase expertise .
Following the appointment of Ali Jafari to head of the IRGC, structural changes were implemented in the IRGC.
In the first round IRGC commanders were dismissed or reassigned and the IRGC is established in 29 units, one for each province and two for the city and province of Tehran.
These units were charged with the task of confronting “foreign and domestic threats against the nation.”
Analists link changes in the IRGC’s structure in the past two years to suppressing popular protests after the presidential election, recent events confirm that link.
Last Sunday Khamenei appointed Mohammad Reza Naghdi as head of Basij.
Naghdi is a notorious brutal commander and the former head of Iranian police counter-intelligence unit with a controversial background in torturing prisoners.
Simultaneous with the developments in the IRGC, ILNA and the newssite Alef reported
that the IRGC’s intelligence division will be transformed into the “Intelligence Organization.”
In the detailed report of this reorganization, ILNA reports that Hossein Taeb will be head of the IRGC’s Intelligence Organization.
Hossein Taeb joined the IRGC after his dismissal of the Ministry of Intelligence and
played a prominent role in suppressing popular protests in opposition to election results and the arrest of reformist leaders.

Reformist Mehdi Karroubi may face legal prosecution for making allegations of 'jail rape'.
He wrote these in a letter to the head of the General Assembly, Rafsanjani.
Also one of the victims told his story after having been fled from Iran.
The Parliament conducted a thorough investigation into the allegations and was not able to confirm any instances of detainee abuse.
A case is opened at the Clerical Court and they will deal with it.
