Iranian authorities can be creative in their attempts to counter Western symbols. Bassij commander Naghdi of the bassij opened an exhibition of art by bassij by cutting keffiyehs tied end-to-end instead of cutting ribbon.
The keffiyeh was worn by many Iranian soldiers in the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq conflict and became a symbol of that war. Nowadays colorful keffiyehs have also become a popular fashion item among Iranian young people.
