Amnesty International said in its annual report on the death penalty, that just five countries, China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and the US were responsible for 88% of known executions in the world.
In the year 2007 are at least 1252 people executed in 24 countries, 3,347 people were sentenced to death in 51 nations last year. At least 27,500 people are now estimated worldwide to be on death row.
Compared with last year, execution figures show a drop, but for instance in China executions are a statesecret and the figures also show an increase in executions in Iran, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.
The cause of the blast in a Shiraz mosque is still unclear. Official reports on stateradio and IRNA insist that there was no assault.
According to Tehran Times, an informed official, who requested anonymity said that final investigation into the explosion shows that the blast was an accident and not an attack.
The official stressed that the incident could not be a bomb attack as no group has claimed responsibility for the explosion.
