Iran: viewpoint

Iranian stateradio announced May 17 a nationwide clampdown against "indecent Western-inspired movements" such as rappers and satanists.
This is a widening of a clampdown on "immoral" conduct against women flouting islamic clothing rules.
Last month media said police would launch a crackdown in May on small companies which fail to enforce strict religious dress codes.



The head of Iran's Statistics Centre said that more than a quarter of young Iranians are unemployed. Some 25.6 percent of Iranian youths aged 15 to 24 are unemployed. This is 28.9 percent in urban areas and 19.4 percent in rural areas.
The overall jobless rate for Iran was 11.9 percent.
Half of Iran's 70 million population is under 30 and the legal working age is 15.These figures were higher than those given by Labour Minister in March, who said that unemployment had stood at 9.8 percent in late December.
The labour minister had hailed what he said was a continuing fall in joblessness from 11.3 percent in the Iranian year from March 2006-7, to 10.6 percent in 2007-8.
The reformist member of parliament Ali Reza Mahjoub said the real rate of unemployment was higher than the official figures suggested.
According to him the real rate of unemployment cannot be less than 16 percent


The daily Iran writes that the Tehran police has arrested a terrorist group.They planned to bomb the annual Book Fair.
A couple of the terrorists were arrested as they were assembling bombs in a hotel.
One of the bombs exploded, killing the bombmaker. The other fled but was captured by the police a few days later.
The group also planned attacks on seminary schools and to assassinate clerics.


Press-tv writes that Iran may press charges against the United States and Britain over their involvement in the blast in a mosque in Shiraz last month.
Following an investigation into the explosion, Iran announced last week that it had arrested six people in connection with the incident.
Monday the judiciary spokesman confirmed that there is ample evidence that both USA and UK were involved in the incident.
Initial reports indicated that the blast was an accident, ruling out the possibility of an act of sabotage.
