Iran: viewpoint

August 31, are in the prison of the city of Zahedan, Sistan-e-Baluchestan province 3 men hanged.
The men, Hossein-Ali Shahraki, Mojtaba Mozafari en Habibollah Pirani were convicted for drugstrafficking.



An earthquake measuring 5,1 on Richter scale caused damages in the city of Hadi-Shahr, East Azerbaijan province.
Two nearby villages were also damaged.
A villager was hospitalized due to injuries caused by the earthquake.
Hadi-Shahr is situated north of the "Mishu" seismic fault.
The earthquake occurred September 3rd, 00.30 hrs, local time.



An airplane of Iran Air, flight IR-811 with 291 passengers onboard, made a safe emergency landing at Mumbai airport in India.
The airplane was a Boeing 747-200 and had to land when the pilot noticed a fire in one of the engines shortly after take-off.



The head of the Tehran bureau of Arabic television network Al Arabya is told by the Ministry of Culture that he has to leave Iran.
Iranian stateradio says that demands for the closure of the bureau came from students from 10 universities.The demands came after broadcast by the (hardline sunni) Saoedi-based network of a film which insulted Ayatollah Khomeini and shiite beliefs.
Whether the office of Al Arabya has to close too, is not known.


The student and womens rightactivist Amir Yaghoub-Ali is sentenced by an appeal court to one year suspended sentence for the period of four years. During these four years he is required to report to the local branch of the Intelligence Ministry every four months.
If he is found guilty by the courts of another crime, during the course of the four years, the serving of the suspended sentence becomes mandatory.
July 2007 he was arrested while collecting signatures in support of the Campaign’s petition in Andisheh Park in Tehran.
