Iran: urgent


Amnesty International asks urgent action for the imminent execution of Yunes Aghayan, member of Ahle-haq group from Azerbaijan, who is sentenced to death for “enmity against God”.
He is in prison of Orumieh since November 2004.
Ín the same case is about February 28 another man executed, Mehdi Qasemzadeh executed.
In 2004 there were clashes between Iranian security forces and members of Ahl-e Haq group who refused to take down a religious slogan at their cattlefarm.
During these clashes five Ahl-e Haq members and at least three members of the security forces were killed.
Yunes Aghayan and four others were tried by Branch 2 in Mahabad.
In January 2005, Yunes Aghayan and Mehdi Qasemzadeh were sentenced to death, which sentences were upheld by the Supreme Court in April 2005.
Three others Sehend Ali Mohammadi, Bakhshali Mohammadi, and Ebadollah Qasemzadeh were also sentenced to death, but their death sentences were overturned by the Supreme Court in September 2007 to serve 13 years in prison in exile in Yazd.

Iran: the law

Maryam Malek, a reporter in legal familymatters and a member of the One Million Signatures Campaign was April 25 arrested and transferred to Vozara Detention Center.
She is charged with propaganda against the state,” and “membership in the One Million Signatures Campaign.” Because she was not able to provide a bail in the amount of $20,000, she was transferred to Evinprison.
April 22 her home was searched by three security officers, who not only searched her rooms, but the rooms and possessions of all the members of her household.

16 CDs, legal books, handwritten materials, her laptop computer, books and materials related to the Million Signatures Campaign including petition forms, and her personal calendar were confiscated.

Parastoo Alahyaari, a member of the One Million Signatures Campaign, was sentenced to a year mandatory prison sentence. She was charged of spreading propaganda against the state.
She is convicted in relation to Article 550 of Iranian Penal Code for collecting information for the One Million Signatures Campaign with the excuse that the laws are discriminatory in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The judge did not allow Parastoo or her lawyer to present an oral defense in response to the charges against her, and only accepted only a written defense.

The spokesman for Iran's judiciary told Tuesday to ISNSA that Roxana Saberi is not on a hunger strike and is in good health.
Her father has said before that his daughter went on hungerstrike 6 days before and was weakened.
USA has expressed concern about the case, urging the immediate release of Saberi.
Saberi was sentenced to eight years of prison and is currently awaiting her appeal.

Iran: said


Two people were hanged in the Karoun prison of Ahwaz on Sunday.
The men, Ala H. en Mostafa Kh. were sentenced to death for murder.
According to IRNA in February-March 2009. was in the same prison a man named Seyed Masoud M hanged. He was convicted for drugstrafficking.

Amnesty International reports that Shirin Ebadi has been refused access to see Roxana Saberi in Evinprison. Ebadi is one of the lawyers in Saberi's appeal case.
A spokesperson for Ebadi said this was despite her having a court order to visit Saberi.
Recently both President Ahmadinejad and head of judiciary Shahroudi urged to have a fair trial for Saberi.

Daily Etemad-e Melli writes that the two reformist candidates set up a joint committee to safeguard the correctness of the forthcoming Iranian presidential elections.
The report says that they will personally follow the actions of this committee and will use everything to ensure the safekeeping of the public's ballots.
The daily wrote also that the establishment of such a committee is a sign of concerns in 'high places'.
Except from Karroubi and Mousavi, two former parliamentarians, Akbar A'lami, and the only woman candidate, A'zam Taleqani have declared their bids to the presidential election.

Sunday was announced that the Iranian intelligenceservice has arrested a group of people who wanted to carry out explosions.
The minister of intelligence has said that the group wanted to carry out the explosions, particularly before the June presidential election.

Iran: solve

Esmail Salmanpour,one of the students who were arrested during a ceremony to pay tribute to Engineer Bazargan, was transferred to the medical unit of Evin Prison while he was suffering from extreme weakness.
At this moment 9 students of Amir Kabir university are in solitary detention in ward 209 of Evin prison.
Their names are: Majid Tavakoli, Hussein Tarkashvand, Esmail Salmanpour, Koroush Daneshyar, Ahmad Ghasaban, Abas Hakimzadeh, Nariman Mostafavi, Mehdi Mashayekhi, and Yaser Turkman.

Hundreds of students from Bou Ali Sina University in the city of Hamedan declared a hungerstrike to protest against the poor quality of food served.
They held a sit-in protest with on their list grievances included improvement in the quality of food served in the university, clarity on the issues of the dormitories, book subsidies and others.
Amir Kabir Newsletter wrote that they placed a petition on the main door of the cafeteria and collected signatures.

Imitation saffron of a Saudi Arabian brand is sold to Iranian pilgrims. The fake saffran "Saffrea Yellow " is chemically coloured, so when it is immersed in water or milk, a yellow color is extracted very quickly.
There is also an imitation brand "Red and White", exported from India, in Iran available.
Saffran is an expensive spice, which is being exported to the UAE and Spain, Sweden, Italy and also Saudi Arabia, which is a major importer.
Annually, 210 tons of saffron are grown, harvested, processed and distributed annually in the world.

In Qum province is Thursday the biggest watertunnel in the Middle East inaugurated.
Five years took construction of the 43.7-kilometer-long tunnel to transfer water from the Dez River to Qomrud River.
Per year, 120 millions of cubic metres will be transferred through the tunnel.
Desert provinces in central Iran have faced a shortage of water over the past year due to below-average rainfalls.

Iran: prosecutable

Journalist Roxana Saberi, who is sentenced to 8 years in prison on charge of espionage, has according to her father, gone to hungerstrike.
He says that his daughter told him she had stopped eating five days ago.

The website Tabnaknews reported that Friday during clashes with PEJAK members at a policestation in Ravansar, Kurdistan province, more then 10 persons were killed.
The exact number of casualties is not known.Reuters reports that 20 people are killed.
In a similar incident at a policestation in Sanandaj, Kurdistan province Saturday, one policeman was killed and four others were injured.

Iranian online police reports that 124,000 computer and internet crime cases were identified last year.
About 26 percent of the crimes reported were related to unauthorized access to computer networks, hacking, spreading slander and lies. Some 7 percent of crimes were copyright violation. Other reported crimes were online harassment and bullying.

Imported oranges from Israel caused a fuss in Iran. The oranges have stickers with a sign that reads, "Jaffa sweetie Israel PO." They were packed in boxes marked "made in China".
The head of the Fruit and Vegetable Distribution Organization in Tehran, described the incident in a interview with Mehrnews as 'worrisome' adding that the violators of the law should be brought to justice.
The deputy head of Iranian Customs said if any Israeli oranges had been imported, it could only have happened through unofficial channels.
The deputy Iranian Commerce Minister presented a prize of USD 1 billion, for anyone who can prove that the Iranian Commerce Ministry has issued an import permit for the oranges.

Iran: moving

Iran stops pelgrimages to holy places for Shiites in Iraq after the deadly blasts which killed at least 63 Iranians and wounded more then 100.
Every year travel thousands of pilgrims to cities in Iraq where holy shrines are of Shia imams.
After the recent bombings, Iranian authorities have announced that the Korsravi border crossing, which connects Iran's Kermanshah province to Iraqi province Diyala , would be closed to pilgrims till further notice.

President Ahmadinejad has the voice of approximately 70% of the members of Iranian parliament, should he seek a second four-year term in the upcoming elections.
He has still not the endorsement of key Iranian Principlist grouping, the Association of Combatant Clergy (Jame'e-ye Rowhaniyat-e Mobarez).
He has not formally announced his bid till now.
According to the Iranian Constitution, the President is elected by the public through direct ballot, and not by members of parliament or through an electoral college.

According to National Council of Resistance of Iran during the first month of the Iranian calendar year (March 21 to April 22), there were at least 220 acts of protest against the government.
From workersprotests by about 2,000 laid off employees at the Pipe Manufacturing Plant Ahwaz and protests by more than 1,000 workers at the Sugar Cane Factory of Haft-Tapeh in Khuzestan about deferred wages, to studentprotests at universities through the country.
In the same period other social sectors carried out 90 acts of protest.
Also agents from the Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) carried out simultaneous raids on houses of people who had family members residing at Camp Ashraf, arresting and imprisoning a number of people.

Iran: aspect

At least 53 Iranians were killed and dozens wounded when a sucidebomb exploded in a restaurant in Muqdadiya in Iraq.
The assault,which is believed to have resulted in over 100 casualties, took place Thursday.
Most of the victims are Iranian pilgrims who were traveling to the Iraqi city of Karbala.
Diyala, in central Iraq, is considered one of the most dangerous areas of the country.

The head of the Tehran court said that three judges were likely to preside over the appeal court of journalist Roxana Saberi.
Last week Pesident Ahmadinejad and judiciary head Ayatollah Shahroudi called for a fair appeal court for Saberi and said she should be provided with all possible legal facilities.
Saberi, although she is of Iranian-American nationality,will be tried as an Iranian citizen.Iran does not recognize dual citizenship.
Originally Saberi was arrested over buying a bottle of wine, then came charges of working without a valid press card and finally she is sentenced for espionage.

The director of Iranian Kidney Foundation said that more than 50% of kidney donors in the country are between the ages of 25 and 26.
Recent study shows that nearly 70% of the country's population aged between 20 and 44 are affected by kidney diseases.
The maximum age is 35 to donate a kidney,and 95% of all kidneytransplants go by kidney sales accounts and people have been usually waiting between one and four months.

Tehrans governor says that a foreign-backed group intends to stage mock assassinations to disrupt Iran's pre-election political climate.
He assured that authorities would take the necessary security measures to ensure that all candidates are provided with a calm setting to run their campaigns.
He added that although the Principlistadministration was under attack by some potential contenders, it would not allow the rights of any candidate to be violated.
However, Reformist media, such as Roozonline, described the governor's speech as 'an assassination threat made against President Ahmadinejad's rivals'.
The notion of a planned assassination was first introduced a few months ago when the Keyhan daily published an article, predicting an incident similar to the assassination of Benazir Bhutto.

The man, Mohammad Ali Navid Khamami is sentenced to death by the court of Rasht.
In the month March another man, Vali Azad was stoned to death in the prison of Rasht, for adultery.

Matin Arjan, A Kurd a Turkish citizen, who has been in Evin Prison since 2005 for his association with the Kurdish Workers Party (PKK) in Turkey,had a heart attack last Thursday.
Following this the left section of his body is paralyzed.He didn't have access to proper medical attention.
After a rudimentary examination in the medical unit of the jail he got a number of injections and was transferred to section 8 of Evin Prison.
Arjan is sentenced to 10 years in prison and was during his stay in Evein prison severely tortured to such a degree that he has sustained serious injuries like loss of speech.

Wednesdaynight Afghan police have killed an Iranian border guard and detained another.Also their gear and motorcycle were confiscated.
The shooting occurred in a border region close to the town of Kang. The Afghan governor says that Iranian and Afghan officials will soon visit the site of the incident to determine the exact course of events.
Afghan officials say that they will hand over the body of the deceased officer to Iranian authorities adding that the border guard in custody would also be released.

Iran: meaning


Five workers of Haft Tapeh Sugar Refinary are sentenced to prison for charges with involvement in holding demonstrations.
Jalil Ahmadi, Faraydoon Nikofar, Ali Nejati, Ghorban Alipour are sentenced to one year in prison, with six months suspension and Mohammad Haydari-Mehr, is sentenced to one year in prison, with eight months suspension. For all the suspensions will be effective for a period of five years and they are not allowed to attend all labor-related activities for three years.

During a meeting held between the members of the Coordinating Committee to Assist in the Establishment of Labor Organizations and the family members of an imprisoned worker, all present members of the Committee were detained by the police.
The name of the worker is Ghaleb Husseini, who is detained for his participation in the May 1 ceremony last year.
After discussions and pressure used by the police to persuade the Coordinating Committee members to quit the organization,everybody was released at the end of the afternoon.
Among the detainees was a 14 year-old boy who was treated like others and had to go through fingerprinting and photographing procedures.

Iranian national soccer coach Mohammad Mayelikohan, has resigned only two weeks after he took the post following Ali Daei's dismissal.
Mayelikohan,who is also coach of footballteam Saipa, was during a duel with club Esteqlal confronted with chants from a group of Esteqlalsupporters, which he said were insulting.
Following this he criticized the Esteqlalcoach. He also complained that he not was supported by the IFF.
According to the IFF, a new coach will be appointed within days.

Iran: interference

The head of justice, Ayatollah Shahroudi, ordered Monday preciseness and expedition on reviewing the case file ofRoxana Saberi.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Qashqavi, also advised foreign officials and individuals to avoid making hasty judgments over the Saberi case.
The lawyer of Saberi, Mr. Abdolsamad Khoramshahi has, according to Etemaad, said(fa) that he next week, together with Shirin Ebadi, will appeal to the sentence.
Roxana Saberi is sentenced to 8 years in prison on charges of espionage.

In heavy clashes in Fars province, 2 soldiers and 4 drugssmuglers have been killed. Fifteen criminals were arrested,The criminal gang calls itself Criminals of the Mountains and is involved in the smuggling of narcotics, organized crime, murder, kidnappings and armed robbery.
The fights started after a report of an armed kidnapping fifteen days ago. The police was involved and after 15 days of armed fighting they located the body of the kidnapped man. Investigation revealed that the man had been murdered before the crackdown.
The Criminals of Mountain group was formed when a number of convicted drug smugglers, thugs, and murderers with long criminal records gathered together in 2004.

Fardanews reports that an Article in the Family Support Bill allowing men to take a second wife without the consent of their first spouse has been dropped off.

A rapport of Tehran Municipality said that Tehran has the worst traffic in the entire country.
Analyses show that an average Tehran rush-hour driver wastes more than 1.5 hours a day in slow or stopped traffic. Transportation experts in Tehran say in traffic jams in the Iranian capital waste 13 million Tehran citizens around 20 million hours per day. Roads and alternatives like public transportation and telecommuting are not keeping pace with the increasing traffic.
The Tehran deputy mayor for transportation and traffic affairs, says Tehran's subway system needs a $120-million investment, which should be provided jointly by the government and Tehran municipality.

The execution of Delara Darabi has been postponed for 2 months.

The spokesperson of the human rights network Iran Human Rights said that the national and international attention this case has received, has been decisive in postponing the execution.
He also said that it also shows that Iranian authorities, and not family of the offended, have the possibility and power to stop executions.

In a letter to the prosecutor for Tehran, Said Mortazavi, did President Ahmadinejad ask to see that Roxana Saberi receives fair treatment from the country's judiciary.
He also called for fair treatment for Hossein Derakhshan, an Iranian-Canadian blogger, who has been arrested in Iran last November.
He wrote in the letter to take care that the defendants have all the legal freedoms and rights to defend themselves against the charges.
