The officials who barred the candidates defended their move by saying that both had not been vetted by the Guardian Council.

The Iranian police has during a crackdown in Sistan-e-Baluchestan province, killed six drugsmugglers.
Also one soldier was killed.
The crackdown is still being seriously enforced. The border Iran-Afghanistan-Pakistan is a busy narcotics smuggling route.
At the latest action, almost five tons of narcotics were confiscated and the police managed to control the region in the past 72 hours.
In Tehran is the third festival of aquatics and health held in the fruits and shrimp center. 15 companies from this sector were present.
In Iran the average consumption of fish and seafood is 7.2 kg a year, but in Tehran this is 8.8kg of fish per capita per year.
Tehran is the main consumption market of the country.
The festival is to promote consumtion of aquatics and health in Iran.
Candidate for president Mehdi Karroubi wants to include female ministers and deputies in his Cabinet should he be elected.
He said in a speech that Iranian culture does not welcome the public presence of women in political, social and even cultural spheres. Religious figures even object.
He also said that imam Khomeini fought against such convictions and significantly changed the status of Iranian women.

GlobalVoicesOnline reports that Amir Heshmat Saran a political prisoner has died in the prison of Karaj.
The blogger Eshterak wrote (fa) that he had been beaten up and did not receive necessary medical care.
Saran was the chairman of the party Iran National Unity Front.
Five years ago he was sentenced to eight years in prison. After he described his experience inside the jail in various articles,his eight-year sentence was increased to 16 years.

The incident happened while he drove through a central square.

Two Iranian students have been wounded, one of them critically, when intruders forced their way in on their room on campus of Visva Bharati university in West Bengalen, India.
Both were wounded in the scuffle when the students refused to hand over their money.

The activist for the rights of the South-Azerbaijan Abdullah Abbasi Javan is Febrary 23 released from Evin prison.
The professor on Shahid Rajai university in Tehran was arrested November 14, 2008.
He was released after paying a bail of $110,000.
The revolutionary court in Tabriz sentenced two activists for the rights of South-Azerbaijan, Hamid Valayee and Gholam Najafi to one year in prison.

Iran will file a complaint against Turkmenistan if there is no agreement made about compensation for the gas cut in January 2008.
The Minister of Oil said to parliament that the parties have had two rounds of talks and that according to the contract, Iran can file a lawsuit if they do not reach an agreement.
He also said that last years cold snap was unprecedented. Turkmenistan halted the gasflow to Iran in December 2007 saying it was for technical reasons, forcing North-Eastern Iran struggling with no gas during the freezing wintry weather last year. Tehran says that Turkmenistan intended to raise the price of its gas amidst winter.
Turkmenistan resumed the gasflow in February 2008.

Newspaper The Guardian wrote that Iranian website Fararu said that last month a group of mostly female actors who were making pornographic films, were arrested in a house in Tehran.
According to the newspaper the website did not specify names, but said most were "beautiful young women".

The Iranian Interior Ministry said May 3rd is the first day of the official registration of candidates for presidency. Candidates have five days to registrate and bring the required documents.
Until now Mehdi Karroubi of the Reformist Etemad-e Melli (National Confidence) party, and ex-president Khatami official announced their official decision to run for presidency.
It is also expected that ex prime minister, Mir-Hossein Moussavi will be a candidate.

okesman for the Iranian foreign ministry said that the three islands in Persian Gulf (Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb and Abu Musa) are inseparable parts of Iran.
He said this after a statement of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
Iran possesses historical, legal and geographical documents verifying that these islands belong to the Islamic Republic.
They fell temporarily under British Control, but in 1971, before the state of the United Arab Emirates was created, they were returned through a legal process. According to international regulations, no state can defy any agreement that had come into being before that state's creation.

Tuesday, February 24, Farzad Kamangar was transferred out of Rajaei Shahr Prison in karaj.
Since then, neither his lawyer or his family were able to get any information on his whereabouts.

Iran: statements
A father has shot his 16-year-old daughter to dead.
The father, Gholam Abbas, told police that he was suspicious of his daughters behavior for some time. That day she left the house early in the morning and when she returned at night, he shot her.
According to par. 220 of Iranian Penal Code if a father or father’s father kills his child or grand child, he will not be punished for murder.
The Iranian foreign ministry confirmed the arrest of journalist Roxana Saberi.
She is accused of "illegal activities" because she continued working in the country after the government revoked her press credentials in 2006.
The spokesman for the Ministry did not say why her credentials were revoked or whether she was in prison.
The kurdish student Habibollah Latifi was found guilty of waging war against God (moharebeh) and for cooperating with PJAK.
He is sentenced to death for this.
In december 2007 Latifa was arrested and charged with taking part in an assault on the car of the prosecutor in Sanandaj.
His lawyer said Latifi has admitted to supporting PJAK but denied being involved in the attacks, saying he was not in Sanandaj at the time.
He is going to appeal the verdict.
Womans rights activist Hana Abdi is released.
She was sentenced to five years of imprisonment in exile,but in appeal her sentence was reduced to 18 months.
Her lawyer says that she is on her way from Tabriz to Sanandaj.
There is another case against her related to Kurdish prisoners hunger strike but the ruling is not issued yet.
He also said that the case of Ronak Safarzadeh will be held on February 28.
Since Safarzadehs arrest, one year and a half ago, she hasn’t received any ruling.

February 28 a man is hanged in the prison of Orumieh.
The man, Mehdi Ghasemzadeh was convicted for "moharebeh", (which often means that he was involved in armed struggle against the authorities) .
He had been in prison since 2004 and was member of a group called "Ahle Hagh".
The correspondent from newspaper NRC reports that human rights defender Mohammad Ali Dadkhah said that the prisonterm for Abdullah Al Mansouri is 30 years and not 11 like he said before.
The lawyer said that the error was made, due to the fact that he has a client with the same surname, but a different first name, who also fled Iran in the 80's.
Information about Al Mansouri is not known to him.

rts say that Iranian-American journalist Roxanna Saberi 31, is arrested February 10 in Tehran.
She is raised in Fargo, North-Dakota and in 1997 crowned to Miss North-Dakota.
She is working as a journalist in Iran for 6 years.
More than a year ago her press credentials were revoked by the authorities in Tehran, but she still was allowed to write short stories.
The reasons of her arrest are unknown.
An Iranian newspaper reported that Mehdi Karoubi, the reformist Iranian candidate for president, protested against the demolition of the Sufi house in Isfahan.
In a letter to Minister Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejeie, he asked under what right the place of worship was destroyed. He wrote that the Gonabadi dervishes are Shiíte moslems and are under pressure and restrictions.
The sect is not illegal in Iran, but many conservative clerics don't approve.
Sufimoslems and their form of mysticism arouses suspicion among orthodox Muslims, both Shiite and Sunni for centuries.
