The Iranian government reads e-mail to Gmail by using a fake certification(dutch).
Computerusers browsers think that this is the Gmail site in Google domain, but in reality the browser is diverted to an Iranian server, where they read the contents, before sending it back to Google Gmail.
The Dutch company Diginotar, which is a certificate authority, validated the fake certificate.
.(man-in-the-middle-attack).
Meanwhile the validation of the certificate is revoked.
But even when the certificate is revoked, it is possible that this may not do much to stop any attacks in progress. The only foolproof way to revoke a certificate is to update each browser, email client, and other piece of software accepting SSL certificates to blacklist the counterfeit credential.
